We returned home to a spread of delicious sushi. Awaiting us was Hisako’s mother and father, of course, as well as her sister, Atsumi-San, and her sister’s husband, Kesuke-San.

We arise to New Year’s Eve morning, eat breakfast, and lay out our battle plans. Breakfast includes cornflakes purchased from a Japanese Seven-Eleven, and some Japanese jam which, despite the diminutive size of the jar in which it is contained, packs exquisite flavor.

After a formal introduction to The Princess’ mother, Naoko-San, we drag our luggage to the back room where we will be staying. Here we find an altar honoring the ancestors of the Yamada Family tucked within a recess in the wall.
Inari Okami
Day two in Kyoto, and another full plate. One shrine, one temple, lunch with Miako-San, and then a trip to Osaka Castle for a 3D Projection light show in the evening.
Yuki
Following our interlude at Nekouan, we ducked into one of the countless tiny restaurants which dot the streets of Kyoto, and sat down for a bite to eat. It’s remarkable how tightly the Japanese manage to pack such spaces, an effect made possible seemingly only by necessity and sheer will.
Ohayo Kyoto-Sama!
Though I only spent two short winter days there, I now believe that Kyoto may well be the most wonderful place in the world.
